Check out my video blog for the KEM Call to Service show at Cass Park
I’ll be performing at the RAW Festival in Detroit on Wednesday, 8/24/11, but the festival goes from Wednesday - Friday. I’m performing some musical pieces from a play called, Dreams Come True. It’s a new and different experience for me and the festival has some really great creative ideas to present a show. I’m just happy to be a part of it because it’s out of my comfort zone and I’d like to see how the theatre “Community” throws their shows. I’ve always loved acting and I get to see a ton of different actors do their thing. Read below for more details on the 3 days festival. Every day is different! RAW Festival very simply is storytelling, impact and exploration in Detroit.
Our inspiration for the RAW Festival came from wanting to make sure that the groundbreaking passion for the arts that Kyle Holton exhibited and inspired in us lives on. In that spirit we will be donating all of the proceeds to the Kyle Holton Memorial Theatre Scholarship Fund at Wayne State University.
Here are the details:
Storytelling: Wednesday, August 24th 8:00-10:00pm
A night dedicated to storytelling in various forms. Juline Jordan, radio personality and community activist, will be hosting a variety of short performances including songs from a new rock opera, poetry reading, stand-up, monologues, and any other types of storytelling in 5-15mins.
Impact: Thursday, August 25th 8:00-10:00pm
Nothing is as it seems on this night of fresh original works. An ensemble of actors will perform four new plays by local playwrights. Theatre is stripped to its core, with minimal set, prop, costume and lighting as the ensemble gets to the heart of the work.
Exploration: Friday, August 26th 8:00-10:00pm
This night of exploration will be a series of pieces that are exactly 10 minutes long that will be performed simultaneously in every nook and cranny of the space. The pieces will be repeated through out the night so that the audience can explore the space and experience each one.
Glitter Booty Dance Party: Friday, August 26th 11:00pm-2:00am
After the festival we are going to host an after party lovingly themed “Glitter Booty Dance Party” as a celebration of the vibrancy and fun of Kyle. Dance and laugh, in glamorous glitter style with new and old friends.
I’m performing at the Mack and Third benefit show (www.mackandthird.org)for the homeless on Sunday August 28th! This day-long free concert and food drive will benefit the area’s homeless shelters and food banks and will provide an opportunity for volunteers to feed the homeless and others in need.
The show is headlined by Motown artist and Grammy nominated, Kem, and the always fun, Morris Day and the Time!! There’s 5 hours of free entertainment! Free Health Screenings and Food / Wares Vendors. I’ll be performing around noon. No specific time yet. Keep posted on the performance time.
What’s the cost you say? Please bring canned goods for admission. Come out for a great cause, good music and seeing another side of Detroit.
It was everything I could’ve hoped for on my Wednesday night feature spot at the Free Your Soul open mic in Detroit. Hosted by Soultreu Free the Free Your Soul open mic is held at the 1917 American Bistro on Livernois between 8 and 7 mile. The 1917 American Bistro is a nice little restaurant with a bottom and top floor and an awesome outside setting where you can eat. Surprisingly no one was eating upstairs and outside seeing as how it was such a nice place to relax.
Everything felt right at the open mic. Good people, poetry and music and food. The sound was great and it’s a rare moment when everything works right like that. The mood was just right and the audience was lively. It’s nights like that that make you really appreciate live shows. So thank you to the good people and listeners for making my first Free Your Soul open mic a great one. ;)
Aw! the power of science! Amazing old school refrigerator without electricity!
Flower Pot Fridge!
The world’s cheapest and easiest refrigerator to make, it uses minimal resources and runs completely without electricity. It’s called a zeer pot, or the pot-in-pot and was rebirthed by Mohammed Bah Abba, who put the laws of thermodynamics to work for mankind.
The zeer pot, is just two simple pots, one pot smaller than the other.
The smaller pot is put inside the bigger pot, and we fill the space between with sand. We wet the sand twice a day and cover the top with a wet towell to keep warm air from entering the interior.Things You’ll Need:
- Two clay (terracotta) pots, one larger than the other
- Sand
- Water
- Cloth to cover the pots
- Clay, cork or other material to plug holes in the pots
My first show at Tracey’s Corner Cafe. Come one come all! I’m opening for Tony Loduca and going on at 8PM. This is an acoustic only set.
My first show at the Motor City Casino!! I have the privilege and joy to open for the Gun Line Band. I’ll be performing from 8:15-8:45.
